Millennials Aren’t All Hopeless

All the news about young Bernie Sanders supporters can get demoralizing.

But there’s good news, too.

What gave me the idea for today’s post was this: once a week Melbourne Beach here in Florida is my office. I take my computer and my hotspot and work.

Nobody is ever here. It’s weird. If this were Massachusetts, we’d be all over this place. Maybe year-round beach access bores people after a while?

Whatever the explanation, I have the beach virtually to myself.

So I was sitting at Oceanside Pizza when a young worker explained to his fellow employee that the free market was the reason cell phones kept getting cheaper and better, while the space shuttle stayed the same or got more expensive.

Pretty good!

Last night at Rollins College Jeff Deist (Mises Institute president) and I spoke to a full room, with plenty of young people, about the election and what it means.

My favorite example: the cruise company that took care of the logistics for the Contra Cruise, the cruise I co-hosted in October, was amazed at how young our attendees were.

This isn’t their usual demographic.

They do cruises for National Review and the Weekly Standard, and they tell us those are much older crowds.

When it comes to curious and thinking young people, who read books rather than regurgitate slogans, we’re way ahead.

The cruise, by the way, was really amazing: Bob Murphy and I were marveling at it as it was happening. I told him, “This cruise is better than any of my books.”
