Sen. Cruz: Hong Kongers Are Engaged in an Existential Battle Over What the Future of Hong Kong Will Look Like, and America Stands With Them
by Ted Cruz on October 2, 2019 at 1:24 PM
As member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, yesterday I issued the following statement condemning the Chinese Communist Party's shooting of a peaceful protester:
Today's shooting in Hong Kong marks an unacceptable escalation in the Chinese Communist Party's assault on the people of Hong Kong and their peaceful protests against tyranny. This violence occurred against the backdrop of China's systematic campaign to undermine Hong Kong's freedom and autonomy, against which the United States has already begun to push back. Last week the Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously passed legislation that incorporated my Hong Kong Policy Reevaluation Act, which strengthens monitoring of Chinese encroachment related to extradition, sanctions enforcement, and export controls, and broader issues related to Hong Kong's autonomy. I call on the Senate to expeditiously take it up and for Congress to send it to the president for his signature. The people of Hong Kong are engaged in an existential battle over what the future of Hong Kong will look like. They should know America stands with them.
