Sen. Cruz: We Must Protect Our Fundamental Right to Free Speech

I released the following statement regarding my support for the First Amendment Defense Act, which I introduced with Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). The First Amendment Defense Act would prevent discrimination by the federal government against individuals or institutions based on their beliefs about marriage.

From college classrooms and corporations, to newsrooms and the halls of Congress, we've seen a culture developing that is fundamentally at odds with the First Amendment. The First Amendment was designed to empower speech, not silence it. It protects all religious beliefs, without attempting to undermine them. This bill will ensure no individual or institution will have to fear discrimination from the federal government for their beliefs, and I am proud to join Sen. Lee and my colleagues in this effort.

Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla,), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), John Thune (R-S.D.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), David Perdue (R-Ga.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) also joined Sen. Lee as original cosponsors of the legislation.
