Sessions Supports President Trump's Rescissions Package

I released the following statement on President Trump’s recissions package submitted to Congress:

Americans work hard for their money and expect their tax dollars to be spent wisely. If we are going to be serious about getting our country back on track, we need to get our fiscal house in order. So, at the very least, we should look at federal agencies who have left unused and unspent taxpayer dollars either expire or are dormant for several years, with no plans to spend it or allocate it effectively. That seems like common sense to me.

Last month, the president exercised his authority under the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 (ICA) and asked my House and Senate colleagues to rescind over $15 billion dollars. This budget-cutting tool has proven to be extremely successful in the past, as both President Reagan used it over 200 times and President Clinton used it over 100 times to pay down unspent funds. I fully support the administration’s effort to cut nonessential budget items and return money to the U.S. Treasury that has been sitting unused for far too long.

With Republican control, this is our opportunity to reign in our government’s wasteful and unnecessary spending. To have our children and grandchildren burdened by the federal government is completely and utterly unacceptable. I am proud to have supported this package to restore fiscal sanity in our government and harness our country’s out-of-control spending. I look forward to working with the Trump Administration to move this package across the finish line.
