With the March 5th deadline at which Dreamers will begin to lose their temporary legal status and protection from deportation rapidly approaching, we are as close to seeing real immigration reform In the US as we have been in almost 30 years.
It is of critical importance that you take action and call Texas Senators today and tell them that you want immigration legislation to include funding for increasing border security now and a path to earn legal status for illegal immigrants who came to the US as children.
The Senate could vote to pass a number of recently proposed amendments that address providing legal status for DREAMers, increasing funding for border security, family based migration, the diversity visa lottery, and interior immigration enforcement, as soon as today.
In terms of what the majority of the American people think the new immigration legislation should entail, and what is in the best interests of our nation, two things are clear: We need a path to legal status for DREAMers, and we need to increase border security now so we are not in a similar situation 10 years down the road.
These two pillars are simple, nearly impossible to argue against, and have the best chance of getting the bi-partisan support of 60 Senators that is needed to override a filibuster and begin the process of actually passing legislation. For these reasons, and the rapidly approaching March 5th deadline, Senators should save the more controversial topics of family based migration, the diversity visa lottery, and interior enforcement measures for a later discussion.
Although the President’s immigration framework asked for much needed immigration legislation to include four pillars of funding for border security and a wall, a 10-12 year pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million qualifying undocumented immigrants, stricter requirements for family-based migration, and an elimination and repurposing of the visa lottery program, he also said in a bi-partisan meeting with legislators that he would sign off on any immigration bill that the Senate passes with 60 votes.
If the senate does vote to pass a bill, it will need to pass through the House and be signed by The President before it becomes an actual law.
