Voice of the Conservative Vote: The Internet

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computers and servers used by billions of people from around the world. Consisting of trillions of web pages, it is an incomparable repository of the sum of human knowledge. It also serves as an essential communication tool, an unmatched way to collaborate with your fellow man, and is an integral part of daily life. Without the Internet, the face of the world today would be very different.

Currently in Congress are two pieces of legislation proposed under the suggestion of bringing a halt to online piracy of protected intellectual property such as movies, music, and software. These two bills are known as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT-IP Act (PIPA). While the motive behind this legislation is a noble one, the actual steps taken within the bills to combat piracy are frighteningly draconian, and spell out a bleak future for not only the whole of the Internet, but your individual rights and liberties as well.

Many national and international sites and organizations, such as Google, Wikipedia, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, as well as innumerable smaller sites, recognize the frightening issues these hastily constructed bills will cause, and have organized an Internet-wide blackout in order to make people aware of the danger - should these bills pass, Congress could potentially gut the Internet from the ground up.

Learn more about SOPA and PIPA, and why and how you should contact your representatives about the dangers of these bills.
