FBI Helps Brings Justice For Multiple Child Sex Slaves Across US

Two child sex slavery investigations from across the US led to justice served in the past few days, due in large part to the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Each case involved one or more children who were being enslaved on US soil for the purposes of forced child rape for profit.

The two cases occurred in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Sioux Falls case was prosecuted by the US Attorney’s office of the District of South Dakota, and the Tulsa case was prosecuted by US Attorney’s office of the Northern District of Oklahoma.

The Sioux Falls case resulted in the convicted perpetrator, Carl Campbell, age 37, receiving three life sentences for sex-trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and sex trafficking of a child. Campbell also received 40 additional years for interstate transportation for prostitution and obstruction of sex trafficking enforcement. According to the US Attorney’s office, Campbell “lured in young adults and minors and caused them to engage in commercial sex acts in and around Sioux Falls.”

They added: “He assaulted one victim repeatedly over the course of about eight months, during which he forced her to perform commercial sex acts in South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois.”

The Tulsa case has not yet reached sentencing, but convictions were won. Perpetrator Tarran Arnel Brinson, age 27, was convicted on six counts related to child sex trafficking. The US Attorney’s office released a statement saying that Brinson was convicted of “conspiring to recruit, entice, transport, provide, and obtain girls under the age of 18 years knowing and in reckless disregard of the fact that the girls would be caused to engage in commercial sex acts.”

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Dottie Laster, a leading anti-human trafficking activist who helps victims with Laster Global, said she was very proud to see the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) being put to such good use. “Life sentences are appropriate for those who choose to force others into commercial sex. These are multiple acts of rape for money,” said Laster.

Laster expressed some discontent with some in the Department of Justice and stated: “The statutes [TVPA] make clear the purchasers of sex from sex slaves, especially children, are to be prosecuted for their participation in the crimes as well. There is no mention of any prosecutions of the purchasers here.”

Past conversations with FBI special agents that occurred during the period of time I worked undercover with the FBI in their efforts to combat human trafficking confirm Laster’s grievances. The issue of the US Attorney’s office choosing to prosecute only the supplier of sex slavery was commonplace and often frustrated federal law enforcement officers. One FBI special agent stated: “Leadership in the US Attorney’s office often wants to get the headline and avoid the more complicated prosecutions of the buyers. They are not as clearcut, they take more time and more complicated investigative efforts.”

It was considered common knowledge among FBI Special Agents working to free victims of human trafficking that just as in the FBI, the average men and women serving in the US Attorney’s office were not to blame for the calculated choices of their leadership. It was common for assistant US attorney’s to be as upset and bewildered by the choice to not prosecute purchasers as were the nongovernmental advocates and the FBI special agents themselves.

“The destruction to the victims, their families and our society is exponential,” said Laster. “Predators like these and the buyers of their criminal services are jointly responsible for this devastation.” Laster added: “I applaud the efforts of the FBI and US Attorney’s office, but more must be done to fully exercise the Trafficking Victims’ Protection Act.”

The other law enforcement agencies involved in this case are the Tulsa Police Department Vice Unit, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, Sioux Falls Police Department, and the Franklin County (Illinois) Police Department.
