The Morality of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

I’ve been writing since, 2008, almost 17 years in October.  Since that beginning I have written many, many articles on prolife.  I have attended rallies and fundraisers for the innocent unborn.  I’ve heard multiple speakers addressing the topic of LIFE, the good, bad and ugly.  Never have I addressed In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).  So now that President Donald Trump has opened this issue, we are going to educate ourselves together.  As Catholics we know that killing an unborn baby is an Intrinsic evil.

On February 18, 2025, President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order, Expanding Access to In Vitro Fertilization. https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/expanding-access...

It reads in part: “By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1.  Purpose and Policy.  Today, many hopeful couples dream of starting a family, but as many as one in seven are unable to conceive a child.  Despite their hopes and efforts, infertility struggles can make conception difficult, turning what should be a joyful experience into an emotional and financial struggle.  My Administration recognizes the importance of family formation, and as a Nation, our public policy must make it easier for loving and longing mothers and fathers to have children.”

The president has done amazing things for the prolife movement.  Thanks to him we have a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, who in 2022 overturned the wrongly decided Roe v Wade decision.  In the first month of his new term, he was responsible in releasing Prolife advocates who were falsely imprisoned.  He reversed the Mexico City Policy and brought back the Hyde amendment.  There is also great hope in finally defunding the premier baby killing business of Planned Parenthood.

However, the EO on IVF is contrary to the prolife movement and to God’s Commandment, “You shall not kill” and it could doom Trump's prolife legacy. This EO is also at odds with Catholic teaching.  In very simple terms it is NOT a prolife EO no matter what is being said.  Eugenics is also being used by parents wanting the “best” child.

As described by Rev. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, PhD, “IVF involves at least two major moral problems —the “collateral damage problem” and the “intrinsic problem.”

Father Pacholczyk continues, “The collateral damage problem means that in order to achieve one IVF birth, clinic workers may create a dozen embryos, prescreen and transfer several of the “best” ones, discard or freeze the "leftovers", and if more than one implants successfully, selectively abort the additional fetus(es).”  As far as “intrinsic problem,” IVF always involves actions contrary to the meaning of marriage and to the core designs of human marital sexuality.”  To read more on this go to Making Sense of Bioethics: Column #217 : Poking the Hornet’s Nest of IVF — The National Catholic Bioethics Center

Trump’s EO further states: “In vitro fertilization (IVF) offers hope to men and women experiencing fertility challenges.  Americans need reliable access to IVF and more affordable treatment options, as the cost per cycle can range from $12,000 to $25,000.  Providing support, awareness, and access to affordable fertility treatments can help these families navigate their path to parenthood with hope and confidence.”

This EO also opens the door to treating the embryos as a product.  All embryos no matter how illicit the conception, are made in His image.

Millions of babies are frozen, destroyed and then discarded.  There is no human dignity for the parents when there is no natural human intimacy.  There is no human dignity when the baby becomes a commodity.

On the surface IVF appears to be a solution to the heartbreak of infertility, but delving into its process you see that it threatens the sanctity of life.  Solutions to infertility should be introduced to parents who desperately are looking to conceive.

As Bishop Joseph Strickland commented on X:  "IVF violates the same principles as abortion and all the other threats to the Sanctity of Life. It disposes of some newly conceived human persons in order to allow others to live."  In essence, you cannot be for IVF and be a Christian just like you can't be a Catholic and support abortion.

At present there are no regulations regarding IVF.  Appearing on EWTN, the Raymond Arroyo show, Rev. Pacholczyk, said that IVF should be regulated to three embryos and all three embryos inserted into the mother.  Too many embryos inserted in the mother’s womb and, if all live, will involve “selective reduction.”

In reading the EO it is noted that the prolife movement has 90 days to speak up on this immoral issue.

Sec2.  Lowering Costs and Reducing Barriers to IVF.  Within 90 days of the date of this order, the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy shall submit to the President a list of policy recommendations on protecting IVF access and aggressively reducing out-of-pocket and health plan costs for IVF treatment.

Personhood is the answer to the unborn baby status.  I will be addressing “personhood” in a later article.  This EO on IVF has given us a great opportunity to become active in the prolife movement and to act by making our voices heard.

What can we do as Christians to STOP this evil issue which serves as a killing field for millions of babies?

We must continue fighting the good fight that’s what is expected of all Christians.  One of Mother Teresa’s many famous quotes on abortion, “Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use violence to get what they want.  That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”
