Radical Muslim Cleric Captured Crossing US Border - Border Security IS National Security

A radical Muslim Imam, Said Jaziri, was captured recently crossing the US/Mexico border in southern California according to LA Times and the UK Daily Mail, once again proving the point that border security is as much about national security as it is about illegal immigration.  Jaziri was found in the trunk of a Mexican regisistered BMW east of San Diego.

Jaziri allegedly paid the Mexican human smuggling cartel $5,000 to bring him across the border to a "safe place anywhere in the U.S." according to the reports. The 43 year old Muslim cleric was deported from Canada in 2007 to his home country of Tunisia. He was deported from Canada for lying on his refugee application about a criminal conviction in France.

Jaziri is currently being held as a material witness in a human smuggling case against the BMW's driver, Kenneth Rober Lawler who was charged with Immigrant Smuggling.  Jaziri quickly rose to prominence in Canada as the cleric of a mosque in Montreal. He became know for his strict interpertation of the Koran, labeling homosexuality as a sin and pushing for government subsidies to build a larger mosque for the growing Muslim population of Montreal.

The LA Times report states:

According to the court documents, a Mexican foot guide led Jaziri and a Mexican immigrant over the fence near Tecate and he trekked overnight through the rugged back country, to a road where drivers frequently pick up immigrants for smuggling runs into San Diego.

Border Patrol agents, alerted by fire fighters who saw the immigrants get in the trunk, pulled the car over near the Golden Acorn Casino, about 50 miles east of San Diego. He told agents that his journey to the border had been a long one. He took a flight from Africa to Europe, then to Central America and Chetumal, Mexico, on the Mexico-Belize border, where he took a bus to Tijuana.
