Congressman Keith Self Urges DoD to Prevent Houthi Rebel Terrorists from Obtaining Anti-Ship Missiles

Congressman Keith Self sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin regarding startling reports of the Houthi Rebels purchasing highly sophisticated anti-ship missiles from Russia.

This missile, known as the Yakhont missile or P-800 Onik, is infamous for its ability to travel at twice the speed of sound at low altitudes over land and water. Experts believe Hezbollah used this missile in their war against Israel in 2006, as well as in their efforts to support the Assad regime in the Syrian Civil War.

Since October of 2023, the Houthis have successfully disrupted trade through the Suez Canal where 15% of maritime trade once passed through. These terrorists pose a major threat to the global economy, the free flow of trade, and have endangered the lives of countless civilians, including Americans.

“Allowing Houthi Rebels to enhance their weapons capabilities while they terrorize commercial shipping in the Red Sea would be the worst possible development in this crisis,” said Congressman Self. “Our Armed Forces must take all necessary measures to prevent the Iran-mediated sale of Russian missiles to these barbaric terrorists.”
