Cornyn Targets Iranian Airline Linked to Terrorism with New Legislation

I released the following statement after introducing the Mahan Airlines and Terrorism Prevention Act, which would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to report a list of airports at which Mahan Air, the Iranian airline that has recently aided terrorist travel, operates and provide recommendations for increased security measures:

Iran remains the world’s foremost state sponsor of terror, and Mahan Air’s role in ferrying terrorists and weapons throughout the region continues to undercut the interests of the United States and our allies. This is a commonsense measure that will put a microscope on Mahan and the terror networks they support.

In recent years, Mahan Air has frequently worked with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to move weapons and personnel to Syria, adding to further destabilization of the nation.  The airline also facilitated the covert travel of IRGC Quds Force operatives into and out of Iraq by bypassing normal security procedures and omitting information from flight manifests to obscure Quds Force travel.

This legislation would require DHS to compile and submit to Congress a list of airports where Mahan Air has recently landed and assess what added security measures should be imposed on flights to the United States that may be coming from an airport used by Mahan Air.

U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rob Portman (R-OH), Mark Warner (D-VA), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) are original cosponsors of the legislation.
