Judiciary Republicans to Administration: Keep Border Patrol Stations Open

I joined nearly a dozen Judiciary Republicans today in sending a letter to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Chief David Aguilar demanding that the agency rescind its decision to shut down nine Border Patrol stations located across four states. On June 22, 2012, CBP announced that it will close nine Border Patrol stations, some of which are key locations for apprehending illegal immigrants within the interior of the U.S., and reassign these Border Patrol agents to stations along the Southwest border. Since these stations are responsible for the seizure of millions of dollars in drugs and thousands of illegal immigrants, the Administration’s move undermines border security and the enforcement of our immigration laws.

Below are excerpts from the letter to Chief David Aguilar. To read the full letter, visit: judiciary.house.gov/news/pdfs/SignedCBPClosureLetter.pdf

"We are highly concerned that the closure of several Border Patrol stations will undercut proven methods to intercept drug smugglers, human traffickers and illegal immigrants in corridors they use extensively north of the U.S.-Mexico border. We urge you in the strongest terms to rescind the decision.

“The affected stations are scattered throughout northern and central Texas and three other states. These stations were placed in these locations because they were and remain high-volume travel corridors for illegal immigrants and drug smugglers who successfully cross the border without apprehension.

“These stations have proven exceedingly effective in seizing millions of dollars in drugs and thousands of illegal immigrants. With key stations closing, it will be much easier for illegal immigrants and drug smugglers to reach their intended destinations in the interior if they succeed in crossing the border undetected.”
