Texas GOP Featured Voice: Fernando Herrera

Fernando Herrera is the Republican State Representative candidate for District 148. Herrera is a native Houstonian, born and raised in District 148. He attended HISD schools and went on to earn a degree in Fire Science.

After graduating from the Houston Fire Academy in 1981, his first station assignment was protecting District 148. Through commitment and determination he promoted through the ranks of Fire Fighter, Engineer/Operator, Captain, Senior Captain, District Chief, and currently Deputy Chief. He is the first Hispanic Emergency Operations Deputy Chief in the history of the Houston Fire Department. Please see related Certificates and Awards.

Herrera does not only have experience in local government, but he also has substantial experience in private industry. He knows what it’s like to pay employee salaries, work within a budget, and pay taxes, including dumpster permits, automatic alarm permits, etc.  From humble beginnings–his garage–he started a manufacturing company and invented, produced, marketed, and sold a variety of promotional products. While CEO of Herrera Products Corporation, the company grew from a garage business to one employing 14 full and part–time Houstonians.

Herrera believes that volunteering and civic involvement is important to a community. As a member of the Mayor’s Environmental Coordinating Council, his team strives to find ways to help the City of Houston operate more efficiently while simultaneously reducing the waste stream. This City of Houston inter-departmental council develops and implements ways to be more environmentally conscious. From something as simple as two-sided printing, to a recycle program for every city department, the Environmental Coordinating Council attempts to make the city cleaner and more efficient.

A new City of Houston Parks and Recreation program is currently being implemented. Herrera was selected as a charter member of this program known as Citizen Park Inspectors (CPI). As a CPI, he will perform monthly inspections on a City of Houston park located in District 148. The objective of this program is to improve the quality of City parks through a partnership with community volunteers.

Herrera is proud to be Vice President of the Cottage Grove Civic Association. "The well being of our youth is one of my primary concerns," Herrera has said. Herrera enjoys mentoring and speaking to school children about life issues such as leadership, commitment, and dreams. During these school visits he likes to tell the students “you can do or be, anything your mind can see”, and encourages them to push the envelope and believe in themselves.

When faced with decisions in the Texas Legislature, Herrera says that he will draw upon his experience as a public servant, father, civic leader, former business owner, and Texan. He explains that he will carry the comments, suggestions, and concerns of the residents of District 148 to Austin in order for them to be heard.

I humbly ask that you allow me to represent you in the Texas Legislature. Please cast your vote for me in the upcoming March 2, 2010 primaries, and again during the November 2010 election.

"District 148 is only 15 miles from the very spot where Texas won its Independence. Let's preserve the Texas that those before us have fought and died to protect." - Fernando Herrera
