We Have the Fight We’ve Been Seeking
In this letter to the editor of the Conroe Courier, Bill O'Sullivan's message embodies what is best about Americans and why we work as hard as we do. His actions on behalf of our Tea Party have been true and honorable, like the Marines he loves and so proudly represents. It is such a privilege to work with him and other great Americans fighting to secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity.

To the editor:
Sitting in my closet are the Dress Blues of a Captain of Marines. They are there for wearing when I leave this life. I last wore them for the commissioning of my son as a Lieutenant of Marines in May. I am currently very involved in the Tea Party with the Texas Patriots PAC.
Since TARP and the passage of Obamacare, I have been working to get the politicians in Washington to confront this fiscal mess that they created. Instead, they kept kicking the can down the road. The best example of that has been both the feckless Senate not passing a budget for 1,200 days, and the equally inept House leadership for not forcing that issue.
About a month ago, I wrote Congressman Brady’s office asking what we got for the recent six-month budget deal that continues the current mess through next April without any action. As a Marine, once more, I saw an unwillingness to confront the enemy that was going to destroy my children’s and grandchildren’s future, this unsustainable debt and the Entitlement Reform required to defeat it.
I was not happy. I wrote: “What did we get for this? If it’s Paul Ryan on the ticket and we are going to nationalize the deficit and debt question, I’m all aboard.”
Well, we now have the fight the Tea Party has been seeking. My personal goal was to make our Tea Party a political force with the capability of removing incumbents. Some excellent candidates and the trust in us of the people of Montgomery County, we have become that force. This capability focuses the attention of elected officials which even the dollars of lobbyists pales against. The Cruz primary result was the ultimate message to the Republican establishment that we wanted a fighter and we wanted to fight. Whether he heard our message or not, on a national scale, Gov. Romney has given us both for November.
We have arrived at this place through the efforts of a lot of people. It has been amusing reading the characterization of us even in these pages. It was as if we were something sinister. Yet we meet every Tuesday night at our office on Sawdust Road discussing items of public interest. We are conservatives, libertarians, Republicans and even a couple of Democrats. We are an outgrowth of the bank bailout, but that has been exacerbated by the stimulus, Obamacare and the fiscal path we have been on since September 2008. Our leader and president is Julie Turner, a young mom and PhD, though she avoids mentioning her educational achievements. She does this for the same reason as I, the future, in freedom, of our children and grandchildren. Save our young researcher, we are all volunteers.
We held a presidential debate here last fall with Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain. At our insistence, it was on entitlements, which was not being discussed in all the debates that we have seen. It was a great afternoon. We raised a lot of money which was reported in these pages. We have used part of it for constructing the underlying computer capability needed to become more effective and pointed our efforts toward the recently completed primary season. Unfortunately, because of restrictions placed by the Federal Election Commission and the Texas Ethics Commission, it can only be used on “Independent Expenditures” in federal races and administrative expenses. Monies for the township, state and county races have to be paid from separate funds. If we tried to uncomingle the qualified funds from the unqualified ones, it could lead to jail time. Ask Tom Delay. Since the person legally responsible would be me, we never come close to that line.
We now have this fight in front of us. I have a lot of faith in the American people. They can see our future as Greece and a lot of other Western European nations unless we confront this problem. Closer to home, we see California facing a similar disaster. When confronted with the choices that are going to be presented in November, Wisconsin, a Democrat state, chose the path of fiscal responsibility and their economy is being rewarded accordingly. If we win this, and implement and stay with this Ryan plan, I believe it will be successful. When it shows signs of success, we will begin to grow economically again. The wise people will have bet on it early.
Our job as a Tea Party is to keep our legislators resolute for the first two to three years till the positive change becomes readily apparent. Only then can we ease up on the gas. Then I can continue in my retirement at peace and focus on becoming a Golf Rules Official and prepare for wearing my Blue that one last time.
