Sessions Secures NDAA Provision to Encourage Civilian Assistance for Armed Forces

Following the President’s signing of the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law, U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX) issued a statement in response to the inclusion of a provision he championed recognizing the important contribution of Spirit of America, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, to our military personnel and Congress’ suggestion that the Department of Defense (DoD) and military commanders continue their collaboration with the organization:

Spirit of America has a 15-year track record of contributing critical private assistance to DoD missions worldwide in nearly 60 different countries. From combating ISIS in northern Iraq, to countering Russian aggression in Ukraine, Spirit of America has proven to be an effective and trusted way for generous American citizens to personally contribute to the efforts of our boots on the ground. These contributions are then translated into lifesaving assistance and conflict prevention, ensuring the safety of our men and women stationed abroad. I’m thrilled to see my provision included in the annual NDAA to foster the critical partnership between the DoD and Spirit of America. Each year, our goal is to provide necessary support to our servicemembers as they work to secure our nation and this measure will help ensure this legislation, now law, will do just that.

Spirit of America, a privately-funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity founded in 2003, partners with US troops and diplomats to identify and meet local needs that cannot be met by the government. The all-veteran field team works alongside deployed American troops to provide private-sector resources in support of their missions.

Jim Hake, founder and CEO of Spirit of America, said, "I would like to thank Chairman Sessions for his hard work in helping secure this outstanding accomplishment; it would not have been possible without his dedication to this great cause. I founded Spirit of America because I wanted to help America, and the ideals for which we stand, prevail in the world. This is not only an incredible achievement for Spirit of America, but also for our servicemen and women in every corner of the globe who fight tirelessly to preserve the liberty and freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Over the last 15 years, Spirit of America has established an unprecedented partnership with the US military. This legislation both strengthens and advances that partnership, opening up new opportunities to better serve our troops and diplomats operating in the world's toughest places."
