Apply the Point System to the 11 Million Already Here

President Trump outlined his new immigration plan last week. Along with securing the border, the plan would transition our immigration system from emphasizing familal ties to prioritizing merit-based immigration.

The “Build America” visa would follow a merit based system that awards points to applicants based on their potential to contribute to our economy. It would favor applicants who are younger, have “valuable skills,” speak English, and can pass a civics test.

Canada and Australia have merit-based immigration systems. Both countries’ merit systems utilize frequently updated “skilled occupation lists” that reflect what skills in what industries their economies need most. Australia’s list places value on a diverse list of occupations for which applicants can apply, from chemical engineers to wall and floor tilers. This would be a sensible model for us to follow, especially in the tightest job market we have ever seen.

It doesn’t make sense to deport skilled workers when we have a shortage of workers. Think about the millions of undocumented workers who are here now. They have the skills we want and need. We cannot afford to deport them. Our lawmakers must create a method for them to earn legal status.

The President has taken a good step towards fixing our broken immigration system by laying out a commonsense plan he supports. It’s time for Congress to follow up.  Democrats and Republicans need to pass sensible immigration policy for the betterment of our country and its citizens.

Please continue to contact your lawmakers and let them know you support sensible immigration policy.

May God bless you, and may He continue to bless America.
