Texas GOP Featured Voice: Carlos "Charlie" Garza
by TexasGOPVote on January 27, 2010 at 3:01 PM
Carlos "Charlie" Garza is the Republican candidate for the State Board of Education, District 1 and was recently interviewed on Lauro Garza's Conservative Latino Radio Show. Charlie is working hard to unseat Democratic incumbent Rene Nunez.
Charlie says of his early years:
Born and raised in the projects of Harlingen, Texas, my family and I struggled to make a living and my father lost a battle with leukemia when I was 7. Economic survival forced us to become migrant farm workers, following the harvest through Arkansas, Ohio, and Michigan, hoeing cotton, soy bean, picking fruits and vegetables for a pittance. Living conditions were harsh, in a miserable one room shack near the fields, without running water or plumbing.
Although economic survival took priority over formal schooling, I distinguished myself academically as a debater earning several awards for Harlingen High School. Additionally, I earned a Principal nomination from Senator John Tower, as well as a competitive alternate nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy. Following advice from my older brother, I sought to gain experience as an enlisted person and joined the United States Navy in 1979 rationalizing that the academy would be available at a later date.
