This Week in Washington

This week, the House approved two bills to rein in the Administration’s unrestrained executive overreach. The Constitution clearly states that once laws are enacted, the president is tasked with responsibly enforcing them. However, throughout his presidency, President Obama has chosen to selectively enforce the law or sidestep Congress through executive action to push his political priorities. Most recently, the president unilaterally delayed or modified several parts of ObamaCare due to the law’s devastating impact on families and businesses. Read more about This Week in Washington

Trowbridge: Undocumented immigrants deserve in-state tuition

In the most recent Republican Primary, it was pitiful to watch the candidates try to avoid the question of in-state tuition for undocumented resident students. I wish they had all read the article below by Ronald L. Trowbridge, which was originally published in the Houston Chronicle:

Raging now is the heated issue of whether undocumented workers should be permitted in-state tuition. I boldly say, yes - for two reasons: One, educated immigrants pay back more to society than they take. Two, it is ethically right to grant such tuition. Discussing UAS Safety with Aviation Industry Experts

Last Wednesday, I participated in a Transportation Subcommittee on Aviation roundtable policy discussion on “How to Best Utilize FAA UAS Test Range Data”. The purpose of this roundtable was to review how the FAA can best utilize the data from the six unmanned aircraft system (UAS) test ranges, including Texas A&M University Corpus Christi (TAMUCC). Subcommittee Approves FIRST Act with Bipartisan Support

The Subcommittee on Research and Technology today approved the Frontiers in Innovation, Research, Science, and Technology (FIRST) Act (H.R. 4186) with bipartisan support. The bill reauthorizes and streamlines federal investments at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) by funding research and development (R&D) to address national needs. The bill also sets priorities to drive our nation’s investments

Stop the IRS's Abuse of Power

Issues:

The IRS is currently considering new rules to limit the free speech of the very same groups it illegally targeted. In short, the Obama Administration is trying to do through regulatory fiat what it was unable to legally do before: limit the First Amendment rights of Americans.

The IRS was required to accept and publish comments from the public -- and over 140,000 of you did. The public commenting period may have ended, but you can still make

Immigration Summit in Houston to Focus on Human Trafficking

An unfortunate reality of the construction industry is that there are many instances of worker abuse. Much of this has been documented on Construction Citizen over the years. Terrible working conditions, worker misclassification, lack of health insurance and workers’ compensation insurance, and other problems honestly keep me up at night. But, I was only fairly recently alerted to just how prevalent human trafficking is in construction. Read more about Immigration Summit in Houston to Focus on Human Trafficking

Sen. Harry Reid's Camp Attempts To Rescue Wendy Davis

Issues:

The Democratic gubernatorial candidacy of Texas State Senator Wendy Davis has demonstrated a consistent stream of campaign mistakes and has reportedly led national Democrats to dispatch a former aide to Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV). Zac Petkanas, is expected to take command of Davis’ media operation, according to an article in the Dallas Morning News.

The Davis campaign has seen a series of missteps in the first quarter of 2014.

Use All We Can and Sell the Rest

Issues:

"We eat all we can and we sell the rest.'' That is the slogan for the Blue Bell Creameries in Brenham, Texas, that makes the best ice cream in the world. With the U.S. overabundance of natural gas, especially in Texas, that should be America's foreign energy policy: "Use all we can and sell the rest.'' In fact, we have so much natural gas in the Dakotas, they are flaring off gas wells. Read more about Use All We Can and Sell the Rest
