Cornyn: Democrat Filibuster of Trade Bill a ‘Mistake’

I expressed my disappointment Tuesday over Senate Democrats’ filibuster of Trade Promotion Authority legislation. This is one area where the President of the United States is absolutely correct. And we're here not to do what he wants us to do, but we're here to do what our constituents, what the American people want us to do. What they want is the better jobs, improved wages, the sort of robust economic growth that comes along with trade agreements.

This trade tool will give Congress the opportunity to examine any upcoming deal that the President is trying to cut and make sure that the American people get a fair shake.

I'm disappointed that our Democratic colleagues were unable to see how important this legislation is, not to us, not to the President, but to the people they represent.

I admit that I'm a little disappointed that the Democrats, with the exception of one Senator, would choose to block this important piece of legislation.

I hope after making the mistake of blocking this legislation that our colleagues, the 14 so-called pro-growth Democrats out of the 46 across the aisle, will see fit to work with us to try to move this legislation forward.
