Today I welcomed dozens of Texans to Washington for Pope Francis’ visit and address to Congress. His message of hope and love is one that resonates with many people across different faiths. It is appropriate the pope’s visit occurs at a time when our country faces crucial moral questions about the sanctity of life and the kind of society we want to leave to our children.

It was an honor to have Pope Francis address Congress. It was a powerful call for all of us to set aside pettiness and partisan divides and come together with shared values to solve the very real challenges facing this country, and I hope that is a message that is heard on both sides of the aisle.
