Taliban gunmen stormed a military-run school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday, killing nearly 150 innocent civilians according to reports. The overwhelming majority of the victims were students at the school—children and teenagers in grades 1-10. This cowardly act was carried out by the Pakistani Taliban or TTP. Despite all of the noise Battleground Texas made, Battleground Texas faded into the night in Bexar County, their great BLUE Hope dashed and Texas remained RED. Leticia Van de Putte may have won the voters in Bexar County but ultimately Dan Patrick won the Lt Governor’s seat. In fact, in Bexar County only two statewide officials lost by a thin margin. Musical Chairs are in play now that the general election is over. Van de Putte is campaigning for Mayor of San Antonio leaving her Senate District 26 seat open. When President Obama could not get what he wanted from Congress on immigration, he simply issued an executive order. Now, it seems Governor Rick Perry is following President Obama’s example.
The Legislature has on multiple occasions rejected mandatory E-Verify. Now Perry’s made an end run around them and mandated it on his own through an executive order. On December 3, Perry issued Executive Order RP80 requiring Texas State Agencies and private entities seeking state contracts to use E-verify, not only on new hires, but on current and prospective employees including subcontractors. As you know, Congress had a big decision to make last week. Our government funding was set to expire on Thursday at midnight, so we had to pass legislation to pay for federal programs by then. Congress passed a deal right up against the Thursday night deadline to fund our government through September 2015. But I voted against this $1.1 trillion spending bill. Today, the European Union did an about-face of the worst kind, reversing their designation of Hamas as a terrorist organization. The General Court of the EU found that the original decision to include Hamas as a terrorist organization was made in haste based on news and media reports and not a “concrete examination” of their acts.
