Our Government’s Irresponsible Funding Model

Issues:

As you know, Congress had a big decision to make last week. Our government funding was set to expire on Thursday at midnight, so we had to pass legislation to pay for federal programs by then. Congress passed a deal right up against the Thursday night deadline to fund our government through September 2015. But I voted against this $1.1 trillion spending bill. Passing a last-minute deal at the 11th hour doesn’t allow us to give our spending the thorough consideration it deserves. Read more about Our Government’s Irresponsible Funding Model

Repeal and Replace the Immigration and Nationality Act

Issues:

President Obama’s executive action on immigration revealed some deep-seated problems with our immigration laws. They include broad grants of presidential discretion, arbitrary immigration restrictions, and complicated quotas that make a mockery of James Madison’s vision of the Constitution. Obama’s executive actions should be seen as a logical consequence and feature of our immigration laws, not some overreach that shreds them. The State Thrives on Fear

Issues:

I wrote the foreword to Connor Boyack’s new book Feardom: How Politicians Exploit Your Emotions and What You Can Do to Stop Them. With Connor’s permission, I reproduce it below. (Connor discussed the book as a guest on my show this week.)

We are told that what makes our system great is that we make political decisions through rational discussion, not the arbitrary fiat of the kings of yore. But in fact, the last thing the state wants is calm deliberation. It thrives on fear. Government power tends to expand no matter what, to be sure, but it expands much more rapidly under what are perceived as emergency conditions. Give us more power, citizen! There’s no time to lose! Congressman Turner Secures Important Protections for the Parental Rights of Our Service Men and Women

Issues:

Washington, DC: For the last seven years, Congressman Mike Turner, the Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces, has fought to protect the parental rights of our service men and women.

Last week, the bipartisan FY2015 National Defense Authorization Act successfully passed the Senate and is headed to the President’s desk for his signature. Congressman Turner authored and successfully included provisions in this bipartisan legislation that will provide a uniform national standard that prohibits state courts from using past, current, or future deployment against service members when making child custody determinations. Cornyn Votes to Keep Government Open

Issues:

I issued the following statement after voting to prevent another government shutdown:

A broken process created by years of Senate Democrat control has yielded an agreement that is less than perfect.

Despite this, this legislation slashes spending for some of the President’s most overreaching agencies like the IRS and EPA, blocks the Administration’s plan to transfer dangerous terrorists onto American soil, and alleviates small businesses from some of the job-killing regulations stifling growth across the country. Bipartisan Cybersecurity R&D Bill Headed to President’s Desk

Issues:

The House of Representatives yesterday approved bipartisan Science Committee legislation to coordinate and drive research and development (R&D) across federal agencies to address cyber threats to America’s high-tech infrastructure. The Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2014 (S. 1353) is the work of a bicameral, bipartisan compromise prioritizing R&D to help create new technologies and standards to protect America’s information technology systems.
