Hurd Backs Multiple Bills to Ensure Support for Veterans and Their Families

This week, as a member who serves on the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee in Congress, I was proud to support the passage of several bipartisan bills that aid veterans by providing educational, legal and entrepreneurial assistance.

We must keep the promises we made to those who have served and make sure our veterans have access to the educational and financial services they have earned. I am proud to support these bills that make strides to improve the effectiveness of the services our veterans receive through the VA and other entities that affect their daily life. I look forward to continuing to fight for our Texas veterans as a member of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee.

The House passed the following bills supporting veteran initiatives:

The Gold Star Spouses and Spouses of Injured Servicemembers Leasing Relief Expansion Act (H.R. 2227), safeguards families of deceased or catastrophically injured veterans against financial penalties when terminating automobile and property lease agreements.
Protecting Business Opportunities for Veterans Act (H.R. 561), requires the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to use competitive procedures to award contracts to small businesses owned by veterans, including those with service-connected disabilities.
G.I. and Veterans Education Empowerment Act (H.R. 4852), which ensures veterans are informed about educational opportunities for use of the Post-9/11 GI bill through minority-serving institutions like Historically Black Colleges and Universities, women’s colleges, and Hispanic-serving institutions.
The VA Reporting Transparency Act (H.R. 4613), protects veterans from flaws in the VA system by making public VA records requested by Congress, while maintaining privacy standards via redaction.
The Legal Services for Homeless Veterans Act (H.R. 3749), authorizes funding for legal services to be available to homeless and at-risk veterans through legal-aid organizations.
