Do You Believe in Angels? – Feast Day of the Archangels, September 29, 2022
It’s a simple question really. Do you believe in Angels? As for myself, yes I do because Scripture readings lead us to believe in them. Further, I’ve known about angels since childhood since my birthday is on October 2, Guardian Angel Day. Today September 29 we celebrate the Feast day of the Archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael. The three Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are the only angels referred to by name in Sacred Scripture and all three have important roles in the history of salvation. The three Archangels Michael, the protector of the people of God, Gabriel, the messenger of good news and Raphael, the healer in the book of Tobit.
Psalm 103:20
Bless the LORD, all you his angels,
Mighty in strength, acting at his behest,
Obedient to his command.
REVELATIONS 12:7-9 then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night. They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death.
LUKE 1:26-38 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,* and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”* And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived* a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
TOBIT 12:14-15 I was sent to put you to the test. At the same time, however, God sent me to heal you and your daughter-in-law Sarah. I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand and serve before the Glory of the Lord.”
Psalm 148:2-5
Praise him, all you his angels;
give praise, all you his hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all shining stars.
Praise him, highest heavens,*
you waters above the heavens.
Let them all praise the LORD’s name;
for he commanded and they were created
