Important Texas Mental Health Bills to Support

The following three bills have been deemed important by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Texas (NAMI Texas). Please urge your legislators to support these critical mental health bills:

First, SB 1390, the Suicide Safer Schools bill, is scheduled for a hearing on May 14th in House Public Education.  If this bill is going to pass, it has 5 days after the hearing to be scheduled for a vote on the House floor.  We need your help to urge state representatives to support this bill’s passage:

Second, HB 3980, our bill to help Texas better address suicide for those most at risk, still needs a hearing in the Senate!  With so many House bills moving to Senate Health & Human Services, Senator Kolkhorst’s staff said they are receiving a high number of hearing requests for other bills and this bill may potentially not be heard in time.  Please reach out to your state senator (especially constituents of Senator Kolkhorst or gulf area residents) and help us pass effective suicide prevention laws to save lives.

Finally, HB 2618, the peer support pilot program for pregnant women and new mothers experiencing mental health issues unfortunately died in House Calendars committee, but the pilot program may still live on if Senator Kolkhorst and Representative Button amend the program onto the maternal health initiatives bill SB 750.  If you live in their districts (or in the general Dallas/gulf coast area), please contact these two legislators and urge them to add peer support services to SB 750.
