TikTok Must Break Up With the Chinese Communist Party

This week the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans' Data and National Security against Foreign Adversaries Act. This legislation would require the popular video app TikTok to divest, or separate from, its Chinese-owned parent company ByteDance.

TikTok is fully owned and controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Our legislation requires TikTok to sever ties with its Chinese partners to protect the privacy and safety of American citizens. Additionally, TikTok boasts more than 170 million American users, making it a valuable propaganda tool for the CCP. We cannot allow our country’s biggest adversary to spy on American citizens through their phones and promote or suppress information. I am proud to have voted to protect the privacy of Americans and fully counter the CCP on our own soil.
