Congressman Smith to Host Live NASA Downlink with Space Station at Local High School
Special guest Apollo Astronaut Charlie Duke will share experience as one of just twelve people to ever walk on the Moon
by Lamar Smith on April 3, 2015 at 8:28 AM
I will be hosting a live television downlink with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) next MONDAY April 6, 2015 at 10:15 AM CT at Smithson Valley High School. I will be joined by former Apollo Astronaut Charlie Duke to host the event. The students will have an opportunity to ask questions of American Astronaut Terry Virts and European Space Agency Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti live from aboard the ISS, where they conduct scientific experiments in the weightlessness of space.
The U.S. has a proud history leading the world in science, technology, and space. These students represent our future scientists, engineers, mathematicians – even astronauts. What better way is there to invest in their futures than to give them a live experience with astronauts in space aboard the Space Station? Or to introduce them to one of just a handful of people to ever have walked on the Moon? Participating in events like this is one of the best things about my job as Chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.
Apollo Astronaut Charlie Duke: “It is my honor and privilege to participate in this live downlink from the ISS. I have the pleasure to speak to many young people and I always encourage them to Dream Big. From a small town in South Carolina, I ended up as a Moonwalker. So to all the students, study hard, stay in shape because we will need your generation to be a Mars Walker.”
