Hurd Advocates for Comanche Springs

Yesterday I wrote U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary, David Bernhardt, requesting support for the restoration of Comanche Springs in West Texas.

Comanche Springs, after seventy years of running dry, started to flow last decade. With help from the federal government to complement the efforts of our state and local municipalities, we can help restore these incredible springs.

Comanche Springs at one point in time produced 30 million gallons per day of surface flow in the Chihuahuan Desert. With help from the federal government, Texas can take on the largest springs restoration project in history, and we can create a future of water abundance for Fort Stockton and its regional neighbors.

The springs, besides holding incredible environmental value, hold tremendous potential for economic development. Estimates show restoring the springs to year-round flow and revitalizing the historic bathhouse to feature a spring-fed pool would generate $4 million annually in non-local spending. This would also create 72 permanent jobs.

The letter is available here.
