A New National Debt Record

Those of you who have visited my website have seen the ticking national debt clock on the right-hand side. And if you checked out my website in the past week, you probably saw that the United States has hit a new record – and not a good one. Our national debt hit a whopping $18 trillion last week.

To give you a better idea of just how much money this is – that amounts to roughly $56,000 per citizen. At a time when American families are cutting and planning their budgets to make ends meet, the American government continues to spend beyond its means and rack up the debt for our children and grandchildren to pay off.

I came to Washington to push for fiscal responsibility – it’s just common sense that we shouldn’t be spending more than we can afford. This week, as Congress debates a spending plan to fund the government past Thursday, I’ll be fighting to include some much-needed reforms to get us back on a fiscally sound track.
