Protect Yourself Against COVID-19 Fraud

Recently, the IRS Criminal Investigation Unit has seen an uptick in scam cases related to COVID-19 and Economic Impact Payments (EIP).

This attempted scam may be in the form of phone calls or emails by individuals posing as the IRS attempting to gather sensitive personal information.

While members of the IRS Wage & Investment Team may contact you if you submitted an inquiry about your EIP, they will never ask for sensitive information like your Social Security Number.

If you have questions about your EIP, or about potential scam calls, please contact our Conroe office by calling (936) 441-5700.

Remember – If you are contacted by someone regarding your Economic Impact Payment, never give out sensitive personal information.

Those who receive unsolicited emails or social media attempts to gather information that appear to be from either the IRS or an organization closely linked to the IRS, such as the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), should forward it to [email protected]. Taxpayers are encouraged not to engage potential scammers online or on the phone.

Coronavirus-related (COVID-19) scams should be reported to the National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF) Hotline at 866-720-5721 or submitted through the NCDF web Complaint Form

Taxpayers can also report fraud or theft of their Economic Impact Payments to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA)
