Critical Infrastructure Protection Act

Issues:

On Tuesday Congressman Trent Franks’ bill, the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act, passed by a voice vote in the House of Representatives. I proudly supported this vital piece of legislation which would protect our nation from a potentially catastrophic nationwide blackout. This legislation would direct the Department of Homeland Security to enhance our nation’s threat assessments of electromagnetic pulses (EMP) and implement plans on how to best protect and recover should an EMP event occur. Remembering Pearl Harbor

Issues:

It was a bright Sunday morning in the islands of Hawaii. America was at peace and unprepared for war. Soon the rising sun was darkened by hundreds of Japanese planes as they strafed and bombed Pearl Harbor. The American battle ships were sunk. Over 2,400 United States military were killed. Most of the United States aircraft was destroyed while still sitting on the ground. It was December 7, 1941. Read more about Remembering Pearl Harbor

Mary Landrieu Loses Senate Reelection Bid in Louisiana to Republican Challenger Bill Cassidy

Issues:

Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy defeated Democratic incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu in Saturday's Louisiana Senate run-off race.

Under Louisiana's primary system, all candidates appear on the same ballot, despite political party. None of the candidates received 50% of the vote in the November 4th election, forcing this run-off election. Kolkhorst Wins Texas Senate Seat in Special Election

Issues:

After a whirlwind campaign, Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham, on Saturday night defeated four other candidates in a special election for a State Senate seat just vacated by the state's next Comptroller. Former Sen. Glenn Hegar, R-Katy, resigned the seat that represents a huge area spanning from Katy to Brenham to the coast.

Kolkhorst was able to win 55 percent of the vote, with her closest competitor Gary Gates receiving only 34 percent of the vote. The fact that Kolkhorst received over 50 percent means there will be no runoff and she is now Senator-Elect. The election happened quickly enough that Kolkhorst will be sworn in as a senator as the Legislature convenes in January. Read more about Kolkhorst Wins Texas Senate Seat in Special Election

Congressman Pete Sessions Participating in the Weekly Republican Address

Issues:

This week I was honored to join Congressman Ander Crenshaw (R-FL) and House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) in delivering the Weekly Republican Address. This week's video celebrates the passage of the ABLE Act, a critical piece of legislation that would break through the glass ceiling for millions of individuals with disabilities. U.S. Deeply Involved in Climate Change Treaty

Issues:

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change treaty has been profoundly important to Americans ever since it was signed by former President George H.W. Bush and ratified by the Senate in 1992.

Under the UNFCCC, a new treaty is being negotiated in Lima, Peru to cap and tax greenhouse gas emissions that are emitted when fossil fuels are burned to produce America’s energy that maintains our enviable standard of living.

What Do Voters Think About Abortion?

If this election showed us anything, Americans may be more pro-life than previously believed. Wendy Davis' run for Texas governor was supposed to showcase the strength of the pro-choice movement, but Davis lost big time and couldn’t even carry women voters. Congressman Smith Supports Tax Relief for Texans

Issues:

Today I voted in support of a package of tax measures, H.R. 5771, the Tax Increase Prevention Act, that will prevent $45 Billion in tax increases from going into effect for the 2014 tax season. The package will mean relief for every one in six taxpayers.

As the steward of taxpayer dollars, Congress should always seek to return as much as possible to taxpayer’s pockets.
