Tom Pauken’s Speech at Texas State Technical College in Waco on May 3, 2012

It is an honor to be with you here this evening and discuss the important role that your institution plays in addressing the critical shortage of skilled workers in our state. TSTC has a long and distinguished history in providing technical training to students throughout Texas. You have lived up to the mission set forth by Gov. John Connally in 1965, when you were originally established, by becoming one of the premier technical colleges in the nation.

Talking Economics, Education, Peter Schiff, and More

With the head of Mises Canada. (When I move into my new office space in town I’ll be able to stream better; at my present location it’s a miracle I can get high-speed Internet at all.)

SkillsUSA: One of the Best Kept Secrets in Texas

Competition is a staple of life in school. Athletic events, UIL academic tournaments, the performing arts, debate clubs, and farm and ranch contests all give students opportunities to earn credit toward graduation and gain lifelong skills that can’t always be offered within the walls of a classroom.

Yet one of the best-kept secrets in our public schools is another competitive, hands-on program which prepares over a million Texas students for high-paying careers in specific, skilled trades.   Read more »

2012 Congressional Art Contest

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents, and I encourage anyone that is interested to submit their artwork.   Read more »

Rubio’s Dream Act Is An “ICAN Act”: It is Intelligent, Responsible, and Republican

Now that Republicans have formed a proposal for the young undocumented students in the U.S., the Democrats are crying foul. Democrats, et. al are “infuriated” because it is a plan based on an economic and responsible means that will help the U.S. economy and the plight of the youth living in limbo status.

Time Change from Cy-Fair ISD - Is this an attempt to lower taxpayer participation?

In a last minute announcement from School Board Trustee Bill Morris, the time for the Special Board Meeting of the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees has been changed from 3 pm to 6 pm.  The published agenda on the CFISD website still says 3 pm.

This appears to be a last minute attempt by the CFISD Board to diffuse public attendance in a meeting they hurriedly scheduled just before the holidays hoping no one would notice or participate.   Read more »

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Does Not Want Your Vote - So Much for Transparency and Accountability

FOLLOW UP: See the results of this meeting and a video of the discussion in my follow-up story.

Update: In an attempt to diffuse public attendance, the meeting has been changed to 6:00 PM. Since the meeting is still subject to change, call Superintendent Dr. Mark Henry at 281-897-4077 or email the Board at board@cfisd.net for any questions.

It appears Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) is concerned you may have been paying just a little too much attention to what has been going on. You have questioned their spending habits, elected conservative board members and even stopped them from stealing your homestead property tax exemption. You have gone TOO far!   Read more »

Foley Elementary students, parents afraid of Alabama's new immigration law

Alabama’s new immigration law targets school kids. No doubt that will be the headline concerning Alabama’s new “tough” immigration law:

Under the new immigration law, schools must check the citizenship status of any student who enrolls after Sept. 1. The students must present a birth certificate. Those who cannot do so have 30 days to submit documentation or an affidavit signed by a parent or guardian saying that they are here legally. If they don’t, schools would enter a notation in the statewide computer system saying that no proof of citizenship was provided.

Attack on 1st Amendment and Religion – Texas School Punishes Boy for Opposing Homosexuality

I recently wrote an article about the war that is raging against religion in America. From crosses being banned at historical memorials to the government banning prayers at funeral services of fallen soldiers, there is literally an all out war against religion. It is unconstitutional and goes against everything that America was founded on.
