On Wednesday, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, where I serve as a Subcommittee Chairman, approved H.R. 5229, the Wounded Warriors Federal Leave Act of 2014.
I am proud to see this bill, which I co-authored, pass out of committee on a bi-partisan basis. The bill now moves to the House Floor for final passage. This legislation provides disabled veterans that enter the federal workforce the opportunity to seek medical treatment for their service-related disabilities without being forced to take unpaid leave. We must support our veterans, especially those who suffered a disability protecting our freedom. This week, I questioned top officials from the White House and the EPA about one of the most aggressive new government programs in our country’s history. The cornerstone of the White House's sweeping Climate Action Plan is EPA’s power plant regulation. Extending well beyond the power plants themselves, this rule will increase the cost of electricity and the cost of doing business. EPA’s mandates will be difficult for states to meet even under ideal circumstances. If energy prices or energy demand escalate, the costs of meeting those mandates will soar and American families will be forced to pay the bill.

I find it interesting that so many of our legislators today support the idea of arming and training Syrian Rebels - many of whom are the same people who support more gun control laws here at home.

It is a sad reality that President Obama refuses to come to Congress with a clear strategy to destroy ISIS and protect our U.S. security interests. It is my hope that Republicans can convince him to propose a clear plan, consistent with the Constitution, to keep Americans safe, and that it is not laden with impractical contingencies, such as resolving the Syrian civil war, reaching political reconciliation in Iraq or achieving “consensus” in the international community. This week I voted in favor of a continuing resolution measure that would fund government operations. It also contained an amendment authored by House Armed Services Committee Chairman “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.) to authorize train-and-equip authority as part of the effort to defeat the Islamic State. The Senate Judiciary Committee today approved legislation I sponsored to boost support for and protection of victims of human trafficking by increasing law enforcement resources, enhancing victims’ services and increasing penalties in an effort to combat child sex trafficking, child pornography, sexual exploitation and human trafficking. The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) has been releasing a series of reports claiming that immigrants are benefiting from the slightly recovering job market while natives are not. Of course, if immigrants were even less likely to gain jobs than Americans, CIS would use that as evidence that immigrants are a drain on the economy. No matter.
