The Senate Being Used As Incumbent Protection Program

More than a decade since I first came to this chamber, the United States Senate, it has become unrecognizable…Unfortunately, this chamber has devolved into one where not much gets done and when there are votes, they are frequently show-votes with the election clearly in mind.

We've had an experiment in big government over the last six years, and you know what? It hasn't worked out very well. Unemployment rates remain high;

Feds Cook Up New Rules For School Bake Sales

Turn off the ovens, the school bake sales are over.

Bake sales in schools are as American as apple pie and the flag. Parents like Janet Huberty in Atascocita, Texas and other parents in PTAs and PTOs use bake sales to raise money for the school band, cheerleading uniforms and iPads for students.

But now, the almighty federal government has cooked up new rules controlling public school bake sales. No more cupcakes, oatmeal raisin cookies,

Obama's Climate Action Plan

Today, I made the following statement at a hearing with the president’s top science advisor, Dr. John Holdren, and the top EPA air official, Janet McCabe, examining the Obama administration’s Climate Action Plan and proposed EPA power plant regulations.

Today we look at one of the most aggressive new government programs in our country’s history. The Obama administration calls it the Climate Action Plan. Read more about Obama's Climate Action Plan

Happy Constitution Day!

On this day in 1787, the United States Constitution was signed, and our nation’s framework for government was created. Today, I’m proud to celebrate our Constitution which has served generations of Americans as a beacon for liberty and limited government. At a time when the federal government continues to overreach in just about every aspect of our lives, today should serve as a reminder of the Founders’ intentions and our system of checks and balances. A Republican Blueprint for Governing

More than a decade since I first arrived in the United States Senate, the chamber has become unrecognizable. What had traditionally been a forum for thoughtful debate of principled ideas has gradually devolved into a venue for carefully orchestrated theater.

Look no further than the Senate’s September agenda: Amid high unemployment and stagnant wages, widespread frustration over

Examining the Treatment of Whistleblowers

Last week, I chaired a hearing to examine the treatment of whistleblowers under the current administration. The witnesses shared their stirring and heartbreaking testimony. Their compelling story clearly shows the need for more to be done to insure the proper treatment of Federal workers under the 2012 Whistleblower Protection Act.

Whistleblowers are an essential tool in uncovering misdeeds, waste,

Eliminating the Global Threat of ISIL

The global threat of the terrorist group ISIL is real. And it’ll only increase if we allow ISIL to keep building support, resources, and arms. Based on the briefings I’ve received on the subject, I don’t see any current threat on our home turf. But there is certainly the potential for an attack in the future – especially with the still porous condition of our southern border. Read more about Eliminating the Global Threat of ISIL

Is It Murphy's Law to Support Joe Straus?

Issues:

"If you aren't willing to fight for what you believe, do not cry about what you will lose."

I have no idea who this quote is from, but I love it. I think it's fitting of the upcoming Speaker's race for the Texas House. What do I mean? I mean that if you aren't willing to fight for a new, conservative Speaker of the House, then don't cry about what you will lose. What will we lose? The conservative stronghold that we have maintained here in Texas, despite the current speaker's liberal influence. Read more about Is It Murphy's Law to Support Joe Straus?

The Militarization Of Our Local Schools

On August 28, I wrote a piece questioning the militarization of our local police departments. In that article I asked some tough questions concerning the need for local law enforcement agencies to have military surplus items such as grenade launchers and mine resistant armored vehicles (the later are specifically known as a MRAP). I believe that

Uniformed DPS Trooper Asked to Leave Waffle House Because He Was Armed

Issues:

HOUSTON, Texas -- A uniformed Texas Department of Public Safety
(DPS) Trooper was asked to leave a Waffle House restaurant in Grapevine this week because he was armed. The trooper was wearing a Texas DPS helicopter pilot “field uniform” that consists of a DPS polo shirt, tan slacks and his badge and gun were on his belt. Trooper was asked to leave and not to return because he was wearing a gun. Read more about Uniformed DPS Trooper Asked to Leave Waffle House Because He Was Armed
