Thanksgivings

Issues:

It wasn't until I was overseas one year about this time that I realized just how special--and uniquely American--our Thanksgiving holiday is. Of course it was first celebrated by the Pilgrims about 400 years ago. However, it has also seen a revival of emphasis and solemnity during times of national struggles, unprecedented prosperity, wartime and in peace. Read more about Thanksgivings

Professor Propaganda

Issues:

A reader writes:

I have just been assigned a paper for American History at my college in which I must:

“1. Explain how checks and balances (Federal and State) provided for in the Constitution limit the government’s ability to respond to the impending climate crisis.

Texas Republicans Have the Answer!

In June 2012, the largest state Republican convention in the country overwhelmingly approved a sensible immigration plank. It is known as the Texas Solution. Texas Republicans are no longer willing to kick the can down the road. They want Congress to adopt a solution, and they have offered an outline. Now Congress needs to act! Texas A&M Aggie Johnny "Football" Manziel First Freshman to Win Heisman? Dan Rather Says Yes!

Issues:

Dan Rather is Back! Well, sort of....

Texan Dan Rather, whose long career as a journalist (that included being the face of CBS 60 Minutes) ended in shame due to a false report about President George W. Bushs National Guard Military service, has endorsed Texas A&M Quarterback Johnny "Football" Manziel for Heisman. Texas Legislature - Time to Address Employee Misclassification and Payroll Fraud

Texas Workforce CommissionIt is time for Republicans in Texas to take a leadership role in solving the problem of employee misclassification and payroll fraud. During the 2011 Legislative Session there was good legislation put forward, but it did not get enough support from Republicans to move forward. These are not Democrat or Republican issues, but rather they represent principles of the rule of law and fairness. Republicans should not be tricked by some business leaders into believing this is anti-business legislation.

The Medicaid Problem in Texas

Issues:

Medicaid currently takes up about a third of Texas' All-Funds budget, and we can expect it to continue growing over the years unless serious reforms are made. According to a 2010 report by Cato Institute Senior Fellow Dr. Jagadeesh Gokhale on behalf of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, even before ObamaCare was passed, Medicaid was expected to overtake 32% of the All-Funds budget by 2019, and 39.3% by 2040.

Violence in the Middle East

Issues:

Within the past week, Palestinian militants fired missiles at Israeli targets and Israel has responded with strikes of its own in parts of the Gaza Strip. A missile attack on Jerusalem on Friday marks the first attack on the holy city in decades. I pray for the victims of these attacks and for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. I continue to stand firmly by Israel as it works to promote and secure democratic values in a region ravaged by violence and political unrest. Read more about Violence in the Middle East

11 Million Chances for the GOP To Help Itself With Latinos

The number is unclear, but it appears that there are about 11 Million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. Of them, 70% are Latinos. It is further unclear as to how many of them became undocumented, and to many it is irrelevant as many in the public insist on using terms to “group” them all into a pool of lawbreakers who are undeserving of any type of consideration for remaining in the U.S. Read more about 11 Million Chances for the GOP To Help Itself With Latinos

Allen West Suspends Florida CD-18 Recount

The following is a statement from Congressman Allen West regarding his Florida CD-18 race:

For two weeks since Election Day, we have been working to ensure every vote is counted accurately and fairly. We have made progress towards that goal, thanks to the dedication of our supporters and their unrelenting efforts to protect the integrity of the democratic process. While many questions remain unanswered, today I am announcing that I will take no further action to contest the outcome of this election.

While there are certainly still inaccuracies in the results and the actions of the St. Lucie County and Palm Beach County Supervisors of Elections rightly raise questions in my mind and for many voters, after much analysis and yesterday’s recount in St. Lucie County, our legal team does not believe there are enough over-counted, undercounted or fraudulent votes to change the outcome of the election. The Coming Economic Storm

Issues:

The Obama Administration is playing chicken with the economy while hoping their friends in the media blame the GOP for any repercussions if the fiscal cliff leads to a serious recession. Let's be clear, the case is over not whether to increase taxes, per se, or increase revenues, but over the tax rates. It has become a battle of symbolism over substance, something Democrats excel at.
