Texas Republicans Leading the Education Reform Effort

Issues:

Dan Patrick, Republican State Senator and Senate Education Committee Chair, introduced an education reform bill, S.B. 2, in this 83rd session of the Texas State legislature that supports an expansion of the number of charter schools in Texas. Current Texas law limits the number of open-enrollment charter schools to 215, and S.B. 2 would remove that artificial cap.

This is no doubt good news for the over 100,000 children on Texas’ charter school waiting lists. At present, charter schools enroll around 150,000 students, and they have proved popular with parents seeking some alternative to the local public school their children would otherwise attend based on their zip code.

In short, expanding charter schools interjects more competition in the educational arena, and more choice in educational opportunities, all to the benefit of Texas’ children and parents. Read more about Texas Republicans Leading the Education Reform Effort

Vikings and Entrepreneurs!

The History Channel mini-series Vikings begins with a conflict that all societies deal with: the conflict between the entrepreneurial spirit who thinks outside the box and the establishment that seeks to keep the entrepreneurs in their place. The establishment is satisfied with the way things are and have no desire or incentive to change, and Vikings highlights all of this in the first two episodes. In the mini-series, the farmer Ragnar dreams of going west and even has a special boat designed and secretly made to withstand the open seas, but he is opposed by Earl Hararldson who wants to raid various impoverished kingdoms east. The Earl tells one of his lieutenants, “There are no lands west.” He also made it clear to Ragnar in one gathering that raiding Parties are to head east,

Government Peepcrats

Issues:

Each year, the Census Bureau mails a survey to 3 million Americans. Separate from the decennial Census, which is required under the Constitution to count the population, this mandatory survey - the American Community Survey - asks 48 personal questions about mental disabilities in your home, personal financial information, whether you have a toilet and what time you leave for and return home from work each day. If you don’t answer, the federal government threatens you with a criminal penalty.

Energy Independence: Now is the Time

Issues:

The Keystone XL pipeline project is not just a pipeline – it’s a lifeline. It’s a lifeline for the tens of thousands of out-of-work Americans who will gain direct jobs from its construction and implementation, and it’s a lifeline for the millions of Americans who feel the pain of rising oil prices. The Keystone pipeline would create 20,000 jobs, generate more than $20 billion in new revenue for the U.S. economy, and 70% of Americans support its construction.

The Future of Conservatism is Now

Over the next four years, conservatism begins the process of identifying itself for the 21st century, and the process will begin with three young politicians: Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal. Scott Rasmussen prophesied that 2012 was to be the last election that the Republican establishment would decide the nominee. CPAC 2013 showed the future

Pushing For Greater Government Transparency

Issues:

One of my top priorities in Washington is making the government more open and transparent to the American people- whose tax dollars pay the bills in Washington. This week, I questioned top government oversight experts on the ways that we can make federal agencies more transparent.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government reform, which I sit on, has had a hard time

America Needs Politicians’ Investment Strategy

Issues:

Almost all politicians vastly improve their fortunes once they get into office. With 66 percent of the Senate as millionaires, and 41 percent of the House, I’d say politics pays better than bank robbery.

Hillary Clinton, the woman who would be king, made an amazing amount of money with a small investment in the commodities market years ago,

Time to Make Texas Roads Safer for All Drivers - Repeal Proof of Citizenship for Texas Driver's Licenses

Issues:

Non-Citizen Texas Drivers LicenseMany times laws written by the legislature have unintended consequences. The 2011 Texas Legislature passed a law requiring the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to verify proof of citizenship or legal immigration status before issuing a driver's license. The intent was to make our roads safer by reducing the number of illegal aliens driving on our roads. The reality of what has happened is far worse than just the opposite of the intention.   Read more about Time to Make Texas Roads Safer for All Drivers - Repeal Proof of Citizenship for Texas Driver's Licenses
