An interesting thing happened in the world of Texas politics this week. It is pretty rare for a sitting Congressman to make an endorsement of a candidate for Congress in a contested race in the Republican Primary. In the race for CD14, candidate Felicia Harris has pulled off not one such endorsement, but two! I have been watching this race to replace the retiring Ron Paul in the US House of Representatives with some interest for several months. We see some crazy Ron Paul people on the news and we paint the entire group as being crazy. It is like these bad cops who think they are above the law and they break the law and do things like beating people up on video. That is why some people hate cops when, in fact, most cops are doing a great job and risking their lives for us. The problem is that the few bad cops you see on TV unfairly make all cops look bad. I’m working on a couple of blog posts concerning the controversies that occurred at the 2012 Republican Party of Texas held in Fort Worth last week, but thought I’d report on the oddest event of the week, which happened during the last few minutes of the Convention.
All week a small group of young men and women who claimed to represent college and high school students testified in several subcommittees (including the one I served on, the “Family, Life, and Health” subcommittee) and then at the full Rules and Platform Committees. Monday I sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta again expressing concerns with the U.S. Government’s relationship with the Russian state-controlled arms export firm Rosoboronexport, who has for years been arming the Assad regime. I asked Secretary Panetta for a commitment that the Pentagon conduct a full and open competitive process for any future procurement of Mi-17 helicopters, which the U.S. has been buying through Rosoboronexport on a no-bid basis to equip the Afghan military. He asked for a full audit of the Pentagon’s contract with the Russian arms
‘Taking Back our Country’ was the theme of our Texas State Convention and the delegates certainly indicated that that is exactly what we plan to do in November. The convention has come and gone and so much happened that my head is spinning and my feet are still hurting. There is so much to share concerning the convention so I will do it in several articles. We have two Delegates and two Alternate Delegates going to the National Republican Convention to represent Congressional District 21.
Out of three Delegates and three Alternate Delegates elected by CD 21, Larry Nuckols has Delegate Place 1, Lisa Allmon Roper has Delegate Place 3 and Sonja Harris will go as Alt. Delegate 3.
